Simply press and hold the sleep/wake button and the volume down button simultaneously for about 10 seconds. If the reset is successful, try pressing the home button to check its functionality. On the next screen, you will see three options to tap on. All these three options make the Home button work in different ways. You can select any and see how it works for you.

Unlike previous Apple smartphones, the iPhone 7 doesn’t use a mechanical home button; in fact, it doesn’t even move at all. Once you've enabled AssistiveTouch, a gray button will appear on your screen. Tap this button to open a menu of touch options, including the Home button.

How to Add a Home Button to iPhones Without a Home Button
Or, you can remove all the options except the Home button. I've owned Apple devices for the better part of 20 years, and devices with home buttons since the first gen iPod touch was released in 2007. That way it will work exactly the way you want and you will not have to adjust yourself to the default settings. The button also has smart features that can distinguish between a tap and a press so the right function is performed every time you use it. I currently have the same problem with a customer's 7 plus.
Do some homework before you reply spouting the Apple excuse book please...... Also there are 3 other PUSH buttons which have no virtual options. Home button was always a push button up until recent so that argument is also void.

Each transition I ensured the home button was attached to the LCD from the home button. Have you tried using the old screen to see if the issue occurs there? You may need the front camera plugged in at the same time for touch id to work too. You can add a home button using an accessibility feature called AssistiveTouch.
Select ‘Double Tap’ or ‘Triple Tap’ to pick an action. Select the ‘screenshot’ option for screenshots. Now, when you double tap the Apple logo, your phone will screenshot. The home button on both iPhones 7 no longer physically clicks. Instead, it’s a force touch sensor, and it uses the improved Taptic Engine to provide simulated click feedback.
